Left Hook
By: Ian
A short film script about a bullied middle schooler who receives some impractical advice from his father.
Description
"LEFT HOOK" is a semi-autobiographical, semi-surreal short film script about a 14-year-old’s bullies, a dad’s impractical advice, “The Art of War”, the power of music, and how Dave Mathews Band is mightier than the fist. It's a 10-page tribute to my late dad.
I’m realizing now as I write this description that my dad passed away around 14 years ago (Nov. 2009). So that means I’m a whole lifetime older since the events of "LEFT HOOK." That’s crazy to me. If 14-year-old me could speak with 29-year-old me, he’d be pretty devastated to hear that I’m not a marine biologist or a history teacher, but that I’m a corporate sell-out who writes social media captions for Fortune 500 companies. To ease his frustrations, I’d probably say, “Well, kid…Ian…me? With time comes wisdom, retrospect, and a little bit of healthy romanticism.” To which he’d retort, “I don’t know what romanticism means. You gave up on our dreams, you idiot." Then we’d just silently stare at each other—both correct, both confused as to how we’re having this conversation that'd require time travel.
